Foods on the Brat Diet

5. Brat Diet

The brat diet originated as a special diet recommended for children with digestive difficulties. Brat diet foods originally included bananas, rice, apple sauce and toast, which is how it obtained its name.

The idea is that the bland foods on the brat diet list are easily digested and able to relive nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort and other digestive system issues. These foods are consumed for one to three days to allow recovery where the fibre will help digestion while the simple nature of the foods help the appetite to recover.

Raw and uncooked foods are not included as alternatives in this diet, rather the selection of low fat and low fibre items that are easy to digest.

This is not a diet for long term use or weight management since it is extremely restrictive and lacks adequate nutrition and variety. A regular, balanced diet is always recommended for overall health, rather than the brat diet, for adults..
