BMI - Body Mass Index

Health conscious people often ask 'what is my BMI?' Also, they want to know how to calculate their BMI and what is 'normal' or 'healthy' for their age and gender.

This calculator provides your specific BMI once your details are entered. Your BMI can provide a useful starting point for weight and health management.

A high BMI or too much fat around your waist can reflect that your weight is too high and could indicate increased risk of some serious health issues.

Please note that there are some conditions where the BMI may not reflect the correct readings, for example in athletes or very muscular individuals, the elderly and during pregnancy. The BMI figure is not to be used for people with eating disorders.

If in doubt, please initiate a discussion with a medical professional about your weight and health.

BMR - Basal Metabolic Rate

Your BMR is the amount of energy in Calories that your body needs for basic functions, such as breathing and your nervous system, while you are at rest.

The Calorie amount of the BMR does not include calories needed for digestion or exercise, even for the most moderate of movement. It is used to support life and the vital organs for upkeep of the body and usually accounts for at least 70% of daily calories used.

A BMR measurement is comparable to measuring the fuel a car uses when it is in 'idle', ie. just ticking over whilst not moving or carrying any load.

This calculator provides an estimate of your BMR figure and is essential for knowing your body's absolute minimum requirement of calories needed to keep you functioning and healthy.

It forms the basis of any calorie controlled diet, since it is used to determine how many calories you need per day to gain, maintain or lose weight.
